Female Wrestlers' Intimate Photo Scandal: Legal Victory and Deterrent Effect
The world of Japanese women's wrestling was rocked by a digital sexual harassment scandal involving World Woman Pro-Wrestling athlete Diana. The organization, led by wrestling legend, Kyoko Inoue, succeeded in winning a legal lawsuit against an individual who was proven to have distributed intimate photos of wrestlers on social media.
Chronology of Events
This case began when an individual identified as a fan began attending Diana's events in 2023. The individual then repeatedly uploaded photos showing sensitive body parts of the wrestlers, such as buttocks and crotch, on the X platform (formerly Twitter). This action of course causes anxiety and discomfort, not only for the athletes, but also for other spectators who are watching live.
Firm Legal Steps
Angry with this act of harassment, Diana took firm legal steps. They filed a lawsuit with the Tokyo District Court in January 2024, demanding 8.4 million yen in damages. After going through a long legal process, a peace agreement was finally reached on February 17.
Decision Results
In this agreement, the perpetrator is obliged to:
- Paid compensation of 1 million yen to the plaintiff.
- Say a formal apology.
- Promise not to attend Diana's events in the future.
- Even when the event is not being held by Diana's organization, but there are athletes from Diana's organization, the perpetrator is prohibited from being in the ring area, as long as Diana's athlete is in the ring.
- Do not publish anything about the organization or the wrestlers on social media.
